Hat-trick hero Danny McGuire today claimed Leeds Rhinos aren't yet a "great team" – but he reckons they are getting there.
McGuire feels the current team are on a par with the 2004 and 2007 championship sides, but are still improving.

The engage Super League and Carnegie World Club champions are six points clear at the top of the table going into the second half of the season and are also through to the quarter-finals of the Carnegie Challenge Cup.

They have lost just two games in all competitions, boast comfortably Super League's best attack and meanest defence and have a points difference of plus 284.

But McGuire – who has scored trebles in each of Rhinos' last two games – feels they aren't the finished article.

"This team's pretty much got everything you could want in a rugby league side," said the Great Britain stand-off.

"It's really strong up front, we've got some smart players and people who can finish tries and create opportunities.

"It has got the making of a great side, but we're not a great side yet. We've got one trophy this year and there are a couple there still waiting.

"We'll be pushing hard and working all year to try and make sure we do become a great side."

Hat-tricks against Harlequins nine days ago and Wakefield Trinity Wildcats last Friday have lifted McGuire up the try-scoring charts, but he insisted: "It is a massive team game. It's not about individuals it's about working together and playing for your mates.

"We train every day, we enjoy training together and we come out and try and perform for each other on a weekend.

"As long as we keep doing that we'll be successful. I am really pleased with the way I went on Friday, but I was just pleased that the lads put in a good performance and we got the result we wanted and that we built up for in training during the week.

"Wakefield are a good side, in good form and to put 50-odd points on them – and we could probably have scored more – is pleasing.

"There's still things we can work on, but we're pleased with how we went and we're looking forward to Friday's game at Bradford now."
Of the consecutive hat-tricks, McGuire added: "I've never done it in Super League before, but I'm not massively bothered, as long as we're winning.

"It's nice and it's good for the ego to get a few tries, but as long as we are playing well and winning I am not too bothered who scores them."
Wildcats had won six successive games going into Friday's clash and McGuire admitted the nature of Leeds' win was a confidence-booster.

"Everybody thought it would be a close game," he said. "We thought it would be tough and a bit closer, but some of the lads were on fire.

"We were making a lot of yards round the middle and that makes it easier for lads like myself and Rob (Burrow) and Webby (Brent Webb) to get on the end of things.

"It probably wasn't the scoreline everybody expected, but we aren't bothered about that. We just want to go out and perform as well as we can – and we did that."

Rhinos have beaten Bulls twice already this season, but McGuire believes Friday will be "tough".

He said: "We've got the better of them the last few games, but they are a really good side.

"In the last few games they've hit their straps a little bit. I am sure they are looking to put a few things right.

"It's always difficult to go to Bradford and get a result, but we are confident, we are playing well and there's no reason why we won't do that."

Meanwhile, Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington has dismissed speculation McGuire will join Wigan Warriors next season.

McGuire is under contract until the end of next year and Hetherington said the rumours are "completely without foundation".
