LEEDS RHINOS will be keeping their eye on the ball at Belle Vue this evening, coach Brian McClennan insists.
A big win over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats – who Rhinos hammered 44-8 and 58-12 earlier in the campaign – plus defeat for current leaders St Helens at home to Wigan Warriors could see Leeds snatch the league leaders' shield on points difference in the
ir final game of the regular season.
Saints' clash with Wigan kicks off at the same time as Rhinos' derby at Wakefield and McClennan will be keeping in touch with events at Knowsley Road.
But he stated: "Our total focus is on a good performance. We are concentrating on making sure we lay down good foundations to start the game and that we recognise when we have got enough momentum or built enough pressure to start playing a bit of rugby.
"We really feel we have been doing some good work in recognising when to play and appreciating the application of pressure and how to absorb it.
"We want to concentrate on that and we want to play really, really well.
"We like some of the things we've done in the past few weeks and we want to do better.
"The boys have freshened up, they are flying along in training and we are feeling good.
"We have got a bit of work to do yet and we've got to play well tonight for a start, but the boys are looking good at training."
Wins in Rhinos' next three games would see them retain their Super League title and McClennan added: "It is important to go into the play-offs with some good form and good confidence, we understand that.
"We want to finish this 80 minutes being able to say to ourselves, we are continuing to improve and we are getting better and better."
Wildcats have nothing to play for in the league, but McClennan isn't expecting them to roll over.
"We will treat them with due respect, but we won't be talking about their frame of mind," he said.
"We will be turning up expecting a fired-up Wakefield, but we will really be concentrating on ourselves.
"Performance is imperative. We need to come up with something near our best performance.
"We are happy, we are getting to a point where we should be healthy and we are definitely hungry to do well."
Long-term injury victims Jamie Jones-Buchanan (hamstring) and Ryan Bailey (ankle) have both been named in Rhinos' initial
19-man squad.
Leading try scorer Scott Donald could return after missing two games due to a rib problem and Ian Kirke is also back in contention after a foot injury.
That leaves only Ryan Hall on Rhinos' casualty list.
