VOTING opens today for the 2008 Yorkshire Evening Post Leeds Rhinos Shooting Star award.
This week we have been revealing the nominees for the prestigious prize and now it is your chance to decide which young player – aged 24 or under – has made the biggest impact for Rhinos this season.

Code-breaker Simon Worrall is the fifth and final nominee.

South Yorkshire-born Worrall, 23, was captain of the Leeds Carnegie under-19 side that won the National Colts Cup final in 2004.

He represented Yorkshire in the 15-a-side code at under-15, 16 and 18 level and played for England under-16 and under-18 schools team.

Worrall joined Rhinos from Leeds Carnegie in March 2007, impressing in the senior Academy before a successful loan spell with Co-op National One side Doncaster.

Promoted into Rhinos' senior squad at the start of the year, he made his engage Super League debut against Harlequins in March and was a member of Leeds' Challenge Cup semi-final squad last month.

Coach Brian McClennan said: "Simon is learning the game all the time and he is one of our best trainers.

"He applies himself and is 100 per cent committed to trying to learn and become a better player.

"He has not been playing our game for very long, but he keeps improving and he has a great attitude.

"He hadn't played first grade before this year, but he was in our team for the Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-final and he is a player who has made good progress this season."

The other nominees for the award – to be presented at Rhinos' annual black tie awards night at the Queens Hotel, Leeds, on Monday, September 8 – are Carl Ablett, Luke Burgess, Ben Jones-Bishop and Kallum Watkins.

To vote, e-mail the name of your chosen player –- plus your name, age, address and daytime phone number – to yepsportcompetitions@ypn.co.uk (entering Shooting Star as the e-mail subject).

Alternatively, send your entry on a postcard or the back of a sealed envelope to Shooting Star, Sports Desk, Yorkshire Evening Post, PO Box 168, Wellington Street, Leeds LS1 1RF.

Voting closes at midnight next Wednesday.

All votes for the winning player will go into a draw and the reader whose name is pulled out will win two tickets to the event – and the chance to present the award to the 2008 Shooting Star.

Anyone can vote over the age of 18. The winner must be prepared to present the award on stage.

Tickets for the awards night are still available priced £65 plus VAT. To book ring 0113 203 3222.
