The Christmas party season is here and it is time to kick back and have some fun. But how can oxygen help us to recover and have enough energy to party again?

Those exploits on the dancefloor, plates full of fancy food and extra drinks at this time of year are great fun, but they can all take their toll.

It is claimed that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, commonly used by sports stars, can help you recover from the party season, and give you more energy to keep going right through to the New Year.

Sarah Todd, who runs Oxify in Leeds where people can book sessions in a hyperbaric chamber, explains: “When you get more oxygen in your blood it helps produce collagen which increases the elasticity of your skin.

“It also makes you feel better, giving you more energy to go out and party again. And even if the dancefloor isn’t your thing, the oxygen boost has anti-ageing properties as well.”

But what is oxygen therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) means oxygen is delivered in much higher concentrations than is usual (98 per cent rather than the 21 per cent found in the normal air we breathe).

It comes through a mask which is fitted by one of Oxify’s expert team before you lie down for around an hour inside a chamber. The air pressure is slowly increased, allowing more oxygen to be absorbed into the bloodstream and then pumped into vital organs and muscles, including the brain.

Extra oxygen has been found to help in the stimulation and restoration of damaged cells and organs and to encourage new collagen (connective tissue) to form by encouraging new blood vessel formation. It has long been used as a treatment for decompression sickness – also known as the bends – which is a risk in scuba diving.
