Women earn a Long shot at title

Yorkshire women retained their Northern Counties title at Arcot Hall, Northumberland, and qualified to defend the English County championship at Long Ashton in September when they will bid for a fifth successive win.
The team of Naomi Edwards (Ganton), Jodi Ewart (Catterick), Nicola Dunn (Harrogate), Laura Harvey (Richmond), Kim Crooks (Saltburn), Sara Garbutt (Ganton), Ellie Robinson (Middlesbrough) and Emma Brown (Malton & Norton) had a 100 per cent record in f
inishing ahead of the five other northern counties.

Curtis Cup player Ewart made eight- and-a-half points in going unbeaten in nine matches, while Brown won all the six matches she played.

Day 1 – Yorkshire 6.5, Northumberland 2.5. Foursomes: S Garbutt & J Ewart bt J Ross & A Storey 3&2; N Dunn & L Harvey bt L Smith & F Haffey 1 hole; K Crooks & E Robinson lost to S Phillips & L Newton 5&4. Singles: Edwards halved with Ross; Ewart bt K Griffiths 3&2; Garbutt lost to Smith 3&2; Robinson bt Newton 6&5; Harvey bt Phillips 4&3; Dunn bt Storey 6&4.

Others: Lancashire 7.5, Cumbria 1.5; Cheshire 5, Durham 4.

Day 2 – Yorkshire 5.5, Cheshire 2.5. Foursomes: Ewart & Garbutt bt R Goodall & O Briggs 3&2; Edwards & Robinson bt K Whitmore & C Wild 2&1; Dunn & Harvey halved with N Podmore & L Jones. Singles: Edwards bt Goodall 2&1; Ewart bt Podmore 3&2; Garbutt bt G Brown 3&2; Crooks lost to Jones 4&3; Robinson bt N Lowe 6&5; Dunn lost to Wild 3&1.
