Retired school teacher Jay Whittham, from Howley Hall, will step up as president of the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs in 2010 following Harrogate's Bill Hickey, who moves into the top office next year, writes JOHN DRAKE.
Mr Whittham taught at Roundhay School, Matthew Murray School and Bruntcliffe High, Morley, where he was head of English and deputy head.

He retired in 1988 and spent the next 10 years as a volunteer worker for Groundwork Trust. He has been a member at South Leeds, Leeds (Cobble Hall) and at Howley Hall since 1966, captaining the club in 1992-93.

A past captain of the Leeds Society of Golf Captains, he was first elected to the county executive in 1997. His son Geoff is the club professional at East Bierley.

Meanwhile, Yorkshire county player Nikki Dunn, the Harrogate ladies champion, had a tough time at the Daily Telegraph Junior Championship in Abu Dhabi.

She shot 75 75 77 to finish second last of nine girls, 19 back from Scottish Curtis Cup player Carly Booth who successfully defended the title.

Stiggy Hodgson, from, Sunningdale, beat Tommy Fleetwood (Formby Hall) in a play-off to retain the boys' title.
