Darren Calvo has come through as the surprise package of the Leeds Amateur Championship.
People were asking Darren who? before the one-handicapper from Waterton Park, Wakefield, hammered county champion Richard Law 5&4 in the semi-finals.
But they soon got their answer, as Calvo set up a 36-hole showdown with past county champion David Appleyard at Headingley on October 5.
And victory in that, could see Calvo, who started his golf at City of Wakefield, called into the Leeds Union side next season.
It would mean him upsetting the form book further by seeing off Appleyard, the Leeds team captain from South Leeds, who won the Leeds title eight years ago.
But the way Calvo is playing he has a good chance against Appleyard, who progressed to the final by a comprehensive 6&5 win against Nigel Colbeck, from Moor Allerton.
Calvo's club Waterton Park, incidentally, feel they are a backwater of the Leeds Union.
They feel that another of their players, plus-one man Gordon Owen, also merits recognition by the Leeds team selectors.
Meanwhile, Yorkshire's top amateur Steve Uzzell is to turn professional at the close of this season.
Following a successful campaign that has brought him the Brabazon Trophy, Russian Amateur title and international honours, Uzzell has now made it through the first stage of the European Tour qualifying school section B at The Oxfordshire and will move on to the next stage in Spain next month.
The left-hander from Hornsea shot a nine-under par 279 in the 72-hole test to finish 16th of the top 30 and ties who advanced.
Ilkley's James Hepworth and Crosland Heath's Chris Hanson finished a stroke further back.
Joint-winners on 17-under 271 were Bristol's Chris Woods, who as an amateur tied fifth in the Open Championship in July, and Northern Ireland amateur Jon Caldwell.
But it was so near yet so far for Moortown amateur Nick McCarthy – he closed on 284 and missed out by one.
Non-qualifiers included Marcus Armitage (Howley Hall), Haminder Matharu (Cookridge Hall) and Aran Wainwright (Selby).
Rotherham's Neil Walker qualified at Moliets in France where he carded 281 for 21st place.
Harrogate's John Parry and Sheffield trio Danny Willett, Gareth Davies and Oliver Whiteley won through section A two weeks ago to also move on to the second stage to be fought out at four venues near Jerez, Arcos Gardens, Costa Ballena, Sherry and Montenmedio on November 5-8.
Qualifiers then join exempt players, plus others who will bid to improve their categories, at the final school at Catalunya on November 13-18.
Oxfordshire qualifiers: 279 – S Uzzell 71 69 69 70. 280 – J Hepworth 71 67 72 70, C Hanson 68 72 70 70.
Non- qualifiers included: 284 – N McCarthy 72 70 71 71. 288 – M Armitage 70 75 71 72.
