New county champion Richard Law would have been an automatic choice to play No 1 in Yorkshire's line-up against Lancashire at Lindrick on Saturday but, instead of being involved in the crucial Northern Counties League clash, he is on a golfing trip to Portugal that was booked well in advance.
The Low Laithes 18-year-old, whose huge 10&8 win against Nigel Sweet in the final of the Yorkshire Amateur at Alwoodley last Saturday put him in the record books, will make his county debut against Cumbria at Workington on August 9.

He will then be in Yorkshire's squad for their defence of the Northern Counties title on the Isle of Man the following week.

Having lost their opening league match against Northumberland in May Yorkshire, who beat Durham in their next outing, can't afford a slip against league leaders Lancashire.

Only a point separates the Roses rivals but defeat would almost certainly damage Yorkshire's title hopes beyond repair.

Confidence is good, however, and Yorkshire captain Andy King expects to be celebrating come Saturday night.

He said: "The team we have out is largely a young one but is crammed with talent and is highly capable of achieving the right result."

Adam Best, an England Boys international, David Booth – winner of the recent Scottish Open Youths title – Adam Hodkinson and Matthew Evans return to the side.

They join other young tigers Marcus Armitage, Dale Smith, Nick McCarthy and Aran Hodkin.

Yorkshire: D Appleyard (South Leeds), M Armitage (Howley Hall), A Best (Cleveland), M Brown (Pike Hills), M Evans (Rotherham), A Hodkinson (Hallowes), N McCarthy (Moortown), D Smith (Saltburn), D Booth (Rotherham), A Hodkin (Wheatley), S Brennan (Wheatley), N Sweet (Mootown).

Lancashire: M Baldwin (Royal Birkdale), J Hurst (Shaw Hill), J Carroll (Huyton & Prescot), J Robinson (Southport & Ainsdale),S Stuart (St Annes Old Links), M Hunt (Pleasington), D Corsby (Royal Lytham), G Clark (Manchester), M Young (Longridge), I Kenwright (Haydock Park), J Senior (Heysham), S McGlynn (Blackburn).
