Cookridge Hall tour player Kiran Matharu will challenge the top names in the Ricoh British Women's Open, the final major of the year which began at Sunningdale today.
Matharu made the event on the last mark of 72 in final qualifying at The Berkshire.

Yorkshire's best hopes rest with Rebecca Hudson.

The Doncaster player has had to serve her apprenticeship in the pro ranks after dominating the amateur scene, but her career is now flying.

Back-to-back wins in the Tenerife and English Opens plus two other top 10 finishes sees Hudson standing sixth in the Ladies European Tour money list and seventh in the Solheim Cup rankings, two spots away from the qualifying positions.

Hudson feels comfortable competing alongside such players as World No.1 Lorena Ochoa, who won the British Open at St Andrews last season, but she disappointed with her two over par finish in 52nd place in the rich Evian Masters last weekend, finishing 17 shots back from Swedish winner Helen Alfredsson.

Also lining up in the Open is Ganton amateur Naomi Edwards, who tied second in the pre-qualifying on 71 and then finished joint fifth on 69 in the final qualifying.

Yorkshire amateurs Jodi Ewart, the English champion, and Emma Brown missed out in the qualifying along with pros Gina Simpson, Alex Keighley and Natalie Booth.

Meanwhile, Caroline Kirk (Ganton), Pat Wrightson (Huddersfield) and Hilary Smyth (Pannal) will represent the North in the Vets National Jamboree at Southerness on August 11-14.

Elsewhere, Yorkshire Vets, having beaten Cheshire and Lancashire, face a crucial date with Cumbria at Alwoodley on August 20.

The Vets Foursomes event at Alwoodley was cancelled on Monday due to fog and has been re-arranged for September 17.

The next events are five-club competitions at Keighley on August 18 and Silkstone on September 1.

Yorkshire county president Maureen Lockett, from Hallamshire, will move up as president of the Ladies Golf Union at the annual meeting in January.

Lockett was LGU chairman in 2002 and chairman of the English Ladies' Golf Association in 1995.

The former Yorkshire county player, who played in the early 1970s and had a handicap of two, was county captain in 1982.
