John Parry has his sights set on a stepping up to the Challenge Tour next season – and better still, he is in the battle to win a seat at the top table, on the European Tour.
The former amateur star from Harrogate, a member of the Walker Cup team last season, has advanced to the second stage of the European Tour qualifying school in Spain next month but before that he has a big chance to clinch Challenge Tour membership.

The top five in the PGA Europro Tour Championship at Les Bordes, France, on October 20-22 – the winner banking £20,000 – will earn Challenge Tour status.

Parry, 21, stands eighth in the money list after his stunning win in the Ladbrokescasino.com Masters at La Cala in Malaga, Spain.

It took his tour earnings to £12,577 from 12 starts.

Parry has already qualified for the second stage of the main tour's qualifying school when the top finishers will move on to the final school, the gruelling six-round test in Spain next month.

He clinched his second stage spot via section A of the first stage in Germany.

Parry said he saved his best till last to sneak under the radar and win £10,000 for his first Europro Tour win after torrential rain reduced the event to 36 holes.

An eagle at the 14th in the final round drew him level at the top and he then moved clear with birdies on the last two holes to win by two on 12 under par.

Parry dropped just one shot in the 36 holes. He sat two behind the leaders after posting a five under par 67 and then a faultless 65 clinched it for him.

"I was steady up to the last five holes and the eagle really did it for me – I guess I kind of sneaked in under the radar towards the end," he said.

Also in the top 60 in the order of merit who make up the field at Les Bordes are: Chris Hanson (Crosland Heath, Huddersfield), Michael Hemstock (Doncaster), Aran Wainwright (Selby) and James Mason (Rotherham).

Another Harrogate player celebrating is Tom Hesketh – he is the Harrogate Union Golfer of the Year for the second time.

The former England Boys international, who represented Yorkshire this year, was Oakdale's top performer in Union League matches and helped the club to second place in the first division championship.

He clinched his title when he shot 76 and 72 in the Yorkshire Inter Union Team championship at Huddersfield.

Leading positions: 230 pts – T Hesketh (Oakdale); 195 – J Buckley (Harrogate); 190 – W Crick (Oakdale); 180 – M Henson (Bedale), C Wilding (Oakdale); 150 – N Fegan (Harrogate).

Neil Benstead (Ilkley) was the outstanding player in the Harrogate Union Club League, going through the season unbeaten and winning eight and halving two of his matches.
