Leeds tournament player Simon Hurd had not played an event for a month and so proved a bit ring rusty as he shot a two over par 74 in the first round of the Open Championship final qualifying at West Lancs yesterday.
But he was still only four shots off the pace in the chase for four qualifying places at Royal Birkdale next week.

Leading Yorkshire players were Middlesbrough's Jon Lupton, the PGA Assistants' champion, who shot 71 at Southport & Ainsdale and Dan Greenwood, from Clayton West and attached at Forest Pines, Scunthorpe, who fired a similar score at West Lancs.

Danny Belch, from De Vere Oulton Hall, Leeds, had huge support at Hillside where he was once a member. He was also back from the leading players on 73 but said he felt confident of going several shots lower in the second round.
