PAUL Carrigill rarely competes these days as he serves on the European Tour referees panel.
But the Morley man challenges for the Leeds Cup, the PGA North Region flagship tournament which runs for three days at Leeds (Cobble Hall), starting next Tuesday.

Carrigill, who turns 50 in nine days' time, spent 13 years on the European Tour, his
biggest success being chasing home Bernhard Langer in the Spanish Open and winning the Zambia Open.

Carrigill said: "I'm a bit ring rusty but keep in the swing and practice as much as I can.

"I enjoyed playing the Yorkshire PGA championship in June and I'm looking forward to seeing Cobble Hall again, where I haven't played since amateur days.

"Who knows, things just might click."

The 54-hole tournament is being played for the third successive year at Cobble Hall, where it originated in 1902 when six times Open champion Harry Vardon, then based at Ganton, won.

Title-holder John Wells says he has rediscovered form just at the right time.

The 30-year-old Cherry Burton man finished 12th in the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship at Moortown last month and 10th in the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open PGA Championship at Royal St David's a week ago.

The tournament is preceded by a pro-am on Monday and has a 145-strong field including Alex Belt, from Bridlington Links.
