Back in 1986, former Ryder Cup veteran Gordon J Brand, from Ilkley, was runner-up to Greg Norman in the Open Championship at Turnberry.
Today he was attempting to start the clock ticking in his bid to turn it back and reach the Open again.

European Seniors Tour member Brand, 52, is one of 19 Yorkshire golfers entered in the 36-hole final qualifying test, staged today and tomorrow and from which just four players from three venues advance to next week's Open at Royal Birkdale.

Brand makes his bid at Hillside while Chris Hanson (Crosland Heath, Huddersfield), top qualifier in the regional event at Pannal last week, and Selby club pro Nick Ludwell go at Southport & Ainsdale.

Leeds tournament player Simon Hurd plays at West Lancs, as does Leeds Cup holder John Wells (Cherry Burton).
