GORDON J BRAND was on the big money trail again today in the £250,000 Travis Perkins Senior Masters at Woburn – after winning a titanic six-hole play-off battle with namesake Gordon Brand jnr to win the De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship at Slaley Hall, writes JOHN DRAKE.
Brand, 53, from Ilkley, picked up £50,000 – his biggest pay day since finishing second behind Greg Norman in the 1986 Open Championship – for the fourth Seniors title of his career.
His regulation three at the short 17th was enough to see off Bris
tol-based Brand jnr whose tee shot hurtled into an unplayable lie in the scrub.
Gordon J Brand missed a putt at the last hole of normal play to win outright, finishing tied on four over par 292 with Brand jnr.
The play-off battle lasted 90 minutes as the par four 18th was played five times before being settled at the 17th.
Brand, who at Woburn will be up against neighbour Mark James, said: "It was like groundhog day. It was great win again and a massive confidence boost for this week."
Leading final round scores: 292 – G J Brand 72 77 68 75, G Brand Jnr 73 75 74 70. 293 – S Torrance 76 75 75 67, E Darcy 74 74 74 71, Juan Quiros 73 71 76 73. 294 – C Mason 77 73 72 72, J Chillas 75 74 72 73, T Johnstone 75 75 71 73, R Drummond 71 73 76 74, A Murray 73 76 71 74.
Meanwhile, Joe Buckley became the first to win the Harrogate Union's three major championships – the match-play, stroke-play and junior title – when the Harrogate player beat Ilkley's Ollie Shaw in a play-off in the match-play at Ripon City.
Shaw handled the wind to stand two-up with two-to-play only for Buckley to square the match at the 18th.
The first two extra holes were halved and though Shaw hit trouble at the 21st he scrambled to make par, leaving Buckley a 12- foot putt for victory.
In the semi-finals, Buckley beat Mark Buckley, the 2006 champion from Ilkley and no relation, at the 21st while Shaw beat Harrogate's David Keywood 3&2.
