There is never one look in fashion now – the time when a uniform emerged each season is long ago and far away – but the key trends for autumn/winter 2008 are emerging.
The catwalk shows have thrown up various fashion strands which shoppers can pick and mix to suit themselves but if there is one overall theme it is that autumn/winter woman is sexier and more glamorous than spring/summer woman.

Romantic and floaty is out and grown-up chic is in.

Designers Todd Lynn and Giles Deacon showed this grown-up glamour in London, with structured, sexy, suiting and neatly cut skirts and dresses to showcase the female form. Think blouses with neck-ties and full sleeves, high waisted, fitted skirts, wide-legged and high heels.

But it isn't all about sophistication. Now that the passion for all things 1970s is waning, the 1980s were back on the London catwalks, looking very early Vivienne Westwood. There is a definite punk influence in autumn styling with Doc Marten boots, bright colours, shoulder pads and fingerless gloves all in the shops. It's a sexy, feisty, young look and if you want to try it, start with a pair of skinny trousers and a big top, and decorate to taste. A back-of -the-market meets Dynasty look is what you're aiming for.

In New York it all had a much softer edge. Marc Jacobs' Marc line featured strappy ankle boots teamed with giant pink checks and zips on everything, while Sass and Bide teamed oversized fishnets and over-the-knee socks with cute prom dresses and pretty bow belts.

But those who prefer long and lean and fuss-free have no need to fear, there will be plenty of this most wearable of trends around for autumn/winter 08.

On the catwalks, graphic prints and slim line silhouettes that reference everything from sky scrapers to scaffolding have been in evidence. In the real world, expect this to translate into long skirts with techno prints, severe graphic shapes, boxy silhouettes and powerful shoulders.

Coats on the high street echo this look,. Drama is the way to go in outerwear this autumn with coats featuring long, full skirts, or folds and structured necklines.

Finally, the all-important trouser shape. This autumn, courtesy of DKNY in New York among others, it is slouchy and skims the floor rather than the ankle – an elegant, relaxed silhouette that's easy to wear.

The high street is filtering its own version of all these looks into the shops from the end of this month – and pictured here are some of the best examples.

Check with the store to find out exactly when clothes will be in stock.
