Rated outstanding

In 2022/23 Brayton Academy students achieved well above the national average in their GCSE exams for the fifth year running, placing the Academy in the top 10% of schools nationally.

The Academy continues to become the school of choice in Brayton, Selby and surrounding areas, and is rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. In 2023, Brayton Academy received its highest number of first-choice places in the history of the Academy, which has seen this year’s Year 7 cohort becoming the largest year group in the Academy.

Recently the Academy has had over £200,000 invested in new ICT facilities, and a programme of refurbishment of classrooms continues, as well as a recent £350,000 refurbishment of science labs. £1.5 million will be spent on the Academy building in the next year to replace the roof as well as the toilets.

Discipline and resilience

“We believe that the traditional values of discipline and good behaviour matter; it means that all of our students learn and make a huge amount of progress,” says Principal Al Moon.

Students in Year 7 attend four lessons a week on the theme of resilience to support their study skills, learning and mental health. The Academy teaches pupils to be open minded and to have a growth mindset.

Principal Moon says: “In Years 8 and 9 we continue this work by having applied resilience one afternoon per week whereby students can choose to participate in an activity which promotes the ideas of resilience. Activities range from joining our rugby and netball academies to things such as horse riding, charity work, outdoor activities, skiing or cooking.

“We believe that students should have options to study a balanced set of subjects that includes design and technology, art and the performing arts including music and drama. We also encourage students to take part in extracurricular activities that include the performing arts and sports fixtures.

“We expect our students to have high standards in all that they do, to behave and have respect for all others. Our positive discipline system of rewards and sanctions is designed to recognise the achievements of all our students. Too often teachers’ time is taken up by low-level disruption. This is unacceptable at Brayton and our standards of behaviour are exceptional – as are our outcomes.”
