A FRAUDSTER who sold fake designer clothes on eBay with the user name 'Twin Towers 11' has escaped an immediate jail sentence.
Police recovered 1,080 items of suspected counterfeit clothing from a first floor warehouse which father of four Shezad Hussain, 35, rented above a supermarket on Huddersfield Road, Dewsbury. Leeds Crown Court heard that West Yorkshire Trading Standa
rds became involved and representatives of various brands including Lacoste, Stone Island, Timberland and Armani examined the clothing.
Prosecutor Howard Shaw said all the items were confirmed to be fake and Hussain was charged with 24 counts of selling counterfeit goods relating to 283 items.
The court heard if sold they would have netted Hussain £7,300.
Mr Shaw said Hussain had rented the warehouse since 2001 and had registered with ebay in November 2004 using the user name 'Twin Towers 11'.
The court heard Hussain, of Northstead, Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury, had listed more than 4,400 items of clothing on ebay under that user name since February 2005.
Police discovered documents including letters of complaint from customers. Some of the documents revealed Hussain had given refunds when people were not satisfied with their purchases.
Abdul Iqbal, for Hussain, said he had taken a £10,000 Lloyds TSB loan to set up the business, which has now collapsed.
Mr Iqbal added: "He owes the landlord rent, he owes Kirklees Council money, and he is now working as best he can as a taxi driver to repay those creditors."
Mr Iqbal said Hussain had given his free time to help young people at the Ravensthorpe Sports Action and Social Group.
The Recorder of Leeds Judge Peter Collier handed Hussain, who admitted the charges, a 12 month prison sentence suspended for 18 months and ordered him to do 250 hours unpaid work.
