TEENAGERS at one of Yorkshire's biggest school-based combined cadet forces (CCF) stood to attention for their annual inspection as a familiar face returned to Batley Grammar School.
Former member Major Nigel Banks, of the Army Air Corps, examined the uniforms, marching ability, first aid and weapon training of Batley's 75 cadets, along with Colonel Brian Denney, of Rifles TA & Cadets Yorkshire.
Pupils aged 13 to 18 can join the CCF and train for one lunchtime and one evening each week, for skills including flying, gliding, shooting, map and compass, mountain walking and canoeing.
In return, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) provides uniforms, weapons and equipment, access to military transport and training advice.
Maj Banks said: "My time in the CCF prepared me not just for life in the forces but for everyday life.
"Completing challenges that have an element of danger gives cadets a great sense of achievement and really builds their confidence."
Batley Grammar School has been home to the Batley CCF ever since the MoD introduced the sponsored force in the 1950s.
