James Anderson may well have taken his maiden one-day international five-wicket haul with the added handicap of a broken toe — to go with his dodgy knee.

Anderson revealed after his five for 23 had helped England into a 2-1 lead against South Africa at St George's yesterday that he needed treatment for the stubbed toe on his left foot.

England coach Andy Flower said: "He might also have a broken toe. He stubbed a toe in the team room the other day, and it's either horribly bruised or broken."
