AS Jack Sugden he was one of Emmerdale's best-loved characters.

And, with 28 years on the York-shire soap, Clive Hornby was the longest-serving star in its history.

His tragic death at the age of 63 is a huge blow to his family, friends and legions of fans.

His last scenes were broadcast in February, but Clive had been determined to beat a mystery illness and return to work.

It is hard to imagine anyone being able to fill his boots – let alone his famous flat cap.

The flat cap Clive wore was a part of the Yorkshire scene. That silly one worn all the time by the Zak bloke is just ridiculous.
