SCHOOL mergers can be a tricky business. The experience of other schools in Leeds has taught us that.
The latest to join forces are West Leeds High in Armley and Wortley High.
They will come together to form the new Swallow Hill High, which will be housed in a new £25m building.
Hopefully the brand new facilities will help students and staff al
ike make a success of their fresh start.
Joining together two distinct schools with their own distinct identities can be a difficult and painful process.
No doubt there will be hurdles to clear and problems to overcome along the way, particularly in the first months.
But it must be hoped that the transition is made as smooth as possible so that the pupils can get on with learning and passing exams with a minimum of disruption.
The arrival of headteacher Bernard Knowles, currently in charge of a secondary school in Wrexham, will also provide fresh impetus.
We wish him all the best for the challenge that lies ahead.
The showdownD-DAY has finally arrived.
We've endured a long weekend waiting for Leeds United's showdown with Carlisle in the first leg of their play-off semi-final.
This is a crucial period for Leeds – not just for this season but in terms of where they go from here.
A return to the Championship would be a significant signpost on their way back to the top.
And they can take a giant step towards that with a convincing win tonight at Elland Road.
Carlisle have been struggling of late and this seems the perfect time to play them.
In contrast, Leeds have enjoyed a rich vein of form and appear to have peaked at just the right time.
But this is a shoot-out when form flies out of the window.
The players in white who take the field tonight have the hopes of a city resting on their shoulders.
We're sure they will do us proud...
And soon have us marching on together to Wembley.
Proud momentTHOSE involved in the running of St George's Crypt have a big date in London today.
They will be honoured at a special Westminster reception to celebrate the forthcoming major redevelopment of the crypt.
It is just reward for all their hard work and we hope they have a great day.
The crypt was established in 1930 to help victims of the Great Depression. It may be nearly 80 years old, but its work is just as relevant today as it was on the day it opened.
