Baker Greggs of Yorkshire scraps Baked trial stores in Leeds

BAKER Greggs of Yorkshire has denied that trials of an upmarket version of its stores - opened under the name Baked - have been a failure despite axing the name from two outlets in Leeds.
The two city centre stores have reverted to the more familiar Greggs brand following what the company describes as completion of its "conceptual trial" of Baked.

The Leeds-based regional business of Greggs plc opened two Baked shops in Leeds last year to determine the market potential amongst new and existing Greggs customers for luxury pasties and pies.

The shops on Boar Lane and Wellington Street, which opened in summer 2007, offered products that would differentiate from those more often associated with Newcastle-based Gregg's, such as Steak and Black Sheep Ale and Steak and Stilton pasties, Fairtrade hot drinks and a freshly baked breakfast range.

The Boar Lane shop was originally a Greggs shop before being re-branded as Baked in April 2007 whilst the Wellington Street shop opened as a brand new 'kiosk' style unit in the mixed use West Point development.

The baker has denied the Baked concept has failed and says it has been delighted by the success of the Baked trial over the last 12 months.

Simon Smyth, retail development manager for Greggs of Yorkshire, said: "It has provided a great insight into the potential for such products to sit amongst Greggs' existing product range."

He continued: "We made a conscious decision before opening Baked that the shops should in no way be associated with the Greggs brand as we didn't want to influence buyer behaviours.

"As a result we were provided with a much greater insight into the real prospective of the market and the most appropriate methods to apply our knowledge of the Baked customers into our business."

Mr Smyth said a consequence of the trials was that many of Greggs of Yorkshire's 140 shops now provided Fairtrade hot drinks and a breakfast offering of sausage and bacon filled rolls.

The baker is also due to open it's first kiosk' shop in Bradford's Kirkgate centre later this year.

He added: "Greggs has an extremely strong customer base within Leeds and due to the diverse population of the city it provides a great market to trial new business initiatives and products.

"Ensuring we meet the demand of our customers is paramount and trials such as Baked are a fantastic way to ensure we can do this as effectively as possible."
