Wilko leads county home
James Wilkinson (Leeds) led West Yorkshire to a superb win in the senior boys race at the English Schools Cross Country Championships at Sefton Park, Liverpool, on Saturday.
Following a below-par run in the National championship two weeks ago, Wilkinson bounced back to form to take the bronze medal, equalling his performance last year when the race was held in Leeds.
Wilkinson was well supported by Jonathan Brownlee 11th, Jack Hallas (Kirklees) 39th, Michael Salter (Leeds) 46th, Geoff Belcher (Leeds) 47th and Thomas Crowley (Bradford) 53rd.
West Yorkshire also won the junior boys race with Elliott Todd (Leeds), a runner who has improved consistently throughout the season, leading them home with a splendid run in seventh place.
He was well backed up by Max Kaye (Kirklees) 12th, Gordon Benson (Leeds) 17th, Sam Kerfoot-Roberts (Calderdale) 24th and Sam Crowe (Kirklees) 33rd.
The sixth West Yorkshire runner was Alex Hart (Leeds) who finished 109th and this was enough to see off the challenge from North Yorkshire who had their six counters home before West Yorkshire.
In the intermediate section West Yorkshire's Alex Bell (Leeds) won a place in the England team for the Home Countries International in Perth.
