RECORD numbers of runners turned out for a West Yorkshire hospice's annual 10k road race.
A total of 1,241 people finished the 13th annual Wakefield Hospice 10k which is expected to raise an estimated £20,000 much needed funds.
First past the post in the men's race yesterday (sun)was Dominic Bannister of Shaftesbury Barnet in 30mins 51secs.
Matthew Pierson of Holmfirth Harriers posted a time of 31mins 21secs to clinch second spot and Willy Smith of Keighley and Craven AC placed third in 32mins 19secs.
Julie Briscoe of Wakefield Harriers was the first woman past the post in 35mins 43secs with second going to Victoria Whitehead of Valley Striders in 35mins 49 secs and third to Helen Singleton of Wakefield Harriers and AC in 36mins 26sces.
The wheelchair event was won by Jason Gill of West Cheshire in 31mins 10secs.
Around 400 took part in the one mile and three mile fun runs.
Helen Rowlands, events co-ordinator at the hospice, said: "Around 300 people entered on the day which helped make it a bumper year for us. We had a new course and were a bit worried people might get lost but all the runners seemed to have a great time."
Major changes and improvements taking place in Wakefield city centre meant the route changed slightly from the 2007 race.
The start was at Gill Sike Road at Lupset and the races finished at Clarence Park instead of the track at Thornes Park Athletics Stadium as in previous years.
