Leeds were led by their Midlands Champion James Walsh who recovered well after a mid-race bad patch to finish an outstanding sixth.

Leeds University medical student Adam Grice finished a splendid 16th, while veteran Darran Bilton, 42, excelled in 28th place.

Chris Birchall ran solidly throughout for 40th, one ahead of Simon Deakin who was down on his Northern performance, with Martin Hilton completing the "count" in 52nd place in the field of 1,250.

Hilton's training has been severely curtailed by a persistent leg injury and his effort was crucial as Leeds finished with a slender nine-point margin over Notts.

Martin Roscoe (60th), Mike Burrett (64th) and Adam Osborne (70th) all ran well, giving the Leeds team the trophy for nine counters as well.

Northern winner Alistair Brownlee (Bingley) was beaten in the junior race by Lee Carey (Nuneaton) but the Leeds University student was was well clear of the rest for the silver medal.

A below-strength Leeds team were well out of contention in the junior race but their under-15 team were desperately unlucky to miss out on the bronze medals after finishing level on points with third-placed Tonbridge.

Michael Wood (17th) and Elliott Todd (18th) ran particularly well for Leeds.

In the women's race, won easily by Liz Yelling, the best Yorkshire runner was Victoria Wilkinson (Bingley) who finished 11th.
