Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Money has signed a five-year deal worth £17m to become the official sponsor of the London Marathon from 2010.
Virgin Money, the group's financial services division, will lead the new partnership with the ambition of supporting the event and the runners in their attempts to raise even greater amounts of money for good causes over the period.

Virgin hope runners will raise a quarter of a billion pounds during its tenure after taking over from Flora, the long-term London Marathon sponsor.

Since the world's most popular marathon began in 1981 more than £400m has been raised for charity by fun runners.

Virgin Money chief executive, Jayne-Anne Gadhia, said: "I am delighted to be announcing this deal. The London Marathon is both an iconic sporting occasion and a special day full of endeavour, fantastic stories and fundraising.

"The London Marathon 2010 will be the 30th in its rich history and we want to make sure it is the biggest and best yet."
