Sight impaired Leeds woman gets her first driving lesson... in a Ferrari

It was the first time that Sarah Cernis, 53, from Leeds, has ever driven a car due to the fact that she was diagnosed with congenital cataracts at a young age, before being told she has myopic maculopathy.

Sarah’s driving experience was organised by national sight loss charity the Macular Society to raise awareness of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK.

She said: “I have always been partially sighted and haven’t ever drive, so if I was only ever going to have one lesson I might as well have had it in a Ferrari.

“It was absolutely fantastic and the instructor was brilliant. Anything that gets partially sighted people moving very quickly has got to be a good thing.”
