Police have issued an urgent warning to West Yorkshire residents after reports of thieves using hooks to steal car keys.

Two cars – a Citroen DS and a Fiat 500 – were stolen from Normanton on Monday May 31, police said.

The suspect removed the keys for both vehicles from a hook situated in the hallway.

Residents should keep them in a drawer or cupboard out of view, police said.

West Yorkshire Police said: "No damage has been caused to the door or door lock and it is believed that the keys were removed via a hook through the letterbox.

"Please remember to remove car and house door keys from view of doors and windows and keep them in drawer or cupboard out of view.

"You could also consider installing a basket which clips across the letterbox to catch mail or install brushes which make it harder for anyone to pull keys through a letterbox."
